385: You Don't Need More Motivation. You Need This.

Nov 13, 2024

Let’s talk about motivation. It’s a favorite topic, right? We all want to feel that spark, that electric excitement that makes running or hitting a fitness goal feel effortless. But today, we’re diving into why motivation might not be the “golden key” to lasting success and why belief and consistent action are far more powerful allies in your journey.

Motivation: A Quick Spark That Fizzles

Let’s be real: motivation is like that perfect pump-up song you blast before a big race. It’s amazing, energizing… but temporary. Motivation is an emotion, and just like any other feeling, it swings up and down. One day you’re ready to tackle a marathon, and the next, you’re struggling to get out the door.

For steady progress, though, we need something more reliable than a fleeting feeling. As coaches, we’ve seen it time and again—people who depend solely on motivation often lose momentum, especially during challenging phases. That’s where consistency comes in, the real fuel that keeps you moving toward your goals.

How Belief and Consistent Action Beat Motivation

What fuels consistency isn’t motivation; it’s action—and that action is driven by belief. Taking small steps builds confidence. Think of it as climbing a ladder: each rung is an action, a small victory that boosts your belief in what you can achieve.

Let’s say running a marathon feels out of reach. Start with a 5K. Complete that, and a 10K doesn’t seem so daunting. Over time, a half marathon becomes achievable, and eventually, you’re tackling the full marathon. Each step reinforces the belief that you’re capable.

Strengthening Belief Through Small, Daily Actions

Whether you’re new to running or returning after a break, small actions build belief in your abilities. Each time you lace up your shoes and hit the road, you’re showing yourself what’s possible. This creates a positive loop—action strengthens belief, and belief drives more action.

As coaches, especially with clients facing changes like menopause, we see how belief can shape the journey. It's not just about finishing a race; it’s about building an identity as a runner, one action at a time.

Enjoying the Journey, Not Just the Destination

And finally, let’s talk about timelines. Goals are great, but strict timelines can be more pressure than progress. Real transformation happens in the pursuit, not in hitting a deadline. The process is where you grow, learn, and become a stronger, more resilient runner.

So, let’s focus on that journey. Running teaches us that the “win” is in the process itself. When we enjoy the path, those big goals become the cherry on top.

Thank you for joining us in this conversation about motivation, belief, and action. Let’s keep running our lives with purpose, fueled by consistency and a belief in what’s possible. Now, let’s get out there—one step at a time!
