391: 5 Things To Leave in 2024

Dec 26, 2024

As 2025 approaches, it’s the perfect moment to reflect, set intentions, and create space for new triumphs by letting go of what no longer serves us. Let's explore the philosophy of "letting go to let in" and identifying five key areas to release before stepping into the new year.

It’s incredible to think 2024 is coming to a close. This year, like many others, has been a whirlwind—filled with moments that have shaped us as athletes and individuals. Bringing closure to this chapter allows us to welcome success, joy, and progress in 2025.

Let’s recognize our wins, learn from our losses, and explore five things to let go of as we stride into the new year.

1. Let Go of the Myth That More is Always Better

We’ve been conditioned to believe that "more" is synonymous with "better"—more miles, more speed, more strength. But focusing solely on accumulation can lead to burnout. Instead, prioritize quality over quantity. Find your baseline and focus on doing fewer things, better. Improvement often lies in refining our efforts, not simply adding to them.

2. Stop Pushing Hard Every Workout

The belief that every workout needs to be intense is a common pitfall. True progress comes from balance. Recovery and easy days are essential to allow your body to rebuild and strengthen. Embrace those slower, restorative efforts—they’re just as critical to your success as the tough ones. Hard days are still important, but only a couple of times per week for the most balanced plan.

3. Break Free from Arbitrary Numbers

Have you ever thought to yourself, "If I don't run X number of miles or minutes, it's just not worth it or it doesn't count?"  Setting rigid goals, like a specific mileage or pace, can sometimes do more harm than good. Flexibility in your fitness journey is crucial. Focus on the purpose behind your workouts, not just the numbers. Consistency over time is what drives meaningful, lasting progress.

4. Let Go of Not Being Enough

Constantly striving for "better" can make us forget to appreciate where we are now. Your current self—with all your achievements and imperfections—is enough. Fitness is a gift, a celebration of what your body can do, and a lifestyle. Be proud of how far you’ve come, even as you work toward your future goals.

Remember, it's not a goal to achieve, but a constant pursuit - it is the infinite game that we are always in and working to improve.

5. Choose Authenticity Over Comparison

Comparison is the thief of joy. Whether you’re measuring yourself against others or your past self, it’s easy to feel weighed down. Instead, focus on your unique journey. Envision the future version of yourself you want to become and work toward that, free of unnecessary comparisons.

As 2024 transitions into 2025, take time to reflect on this question:

What can you let go of to unlock your potential and enhance your life?

Maybe it’s frustration over an unmet goal or the pressure of an arbitrary target. Shift your mindset to embrace growth, resilience, and contentment.
