429: Teamwork

Oct 02, 2025

It’s easy to think of running as a solo sport. After all, most of us lace up, head out the door, and put in the miles on our own. But the truth is, none of us really runs alone. Teamwork shows up in big and small ways, not only in running but in every area of life.

So let’s dive into what our fifth core value, teamwork, means for us as runners—and how it makes a difference in the rest of our lives too.

Teamwork in Running

Yes, you might be the one running those early miles in the dark, but even then, you’re not truly on your own. Teamwork in running can look like:

  • Formal groups like your local running club or training partners.
  • Informal connections like the neighbor you wave to on your morning loop or the friend who texts “How was your run?” afterward.
  • Virtual communities that cheer you on, swap stories, and remind you that you’re part of something bigger.
  • Your family or partner that “holds down the fort” when you’re out on your run.

Every little connection adds to your support system. And when motivation dips (because let’s be real—it does!), knowing you have a team behind you makes it easier to keep showing up.

Teamwork Beyond the Miles

The beauty of teamwork is that it doesn’t stop when you untie your shoes. Think about your everyday life:

  • Families run on teamwork. From juggling kids’ activities to keeping the household moving, it’s all about cooperation.
  • Workplaces thrive on collaboration. One person can’t carry it all—strong teams make progress possible.
  • Friendships and communities are built on showing up for each other, not just when it’s convenient, but when it really matters.

Teamwork in life—just like in running—is about finding your role, supporting others, and recognizing that we’re stronger together.

What Makes a Team Strong?

A true team isn’t just people working side by side. It’s about supporting each other’s goals and being there through both the highs and the lows. That might mean:

  • Cheering for your spouse when they finally hit that goal pace.
  • Listening to a friend who’s had a tough day.
  • Celebrating someone else’s success as much as your own.

These little acts of support add up to something powerful.

And here’s something that not a lot of people talk about: the ability to ask for help and to receive it. Everyone would probably agree that strong team players give—they give their time, effort, and energy—but receiving is just as important.

Good team players know when they are not the best person for the job and bring others up along with them.

So it’s not about doing it all on your own—true teams are built when everyone can shine.

How to Build Stronger Teamwork

If you want to deepen the sense of teamwork in your running—and your life—here are some practical steps:

  1. Identify Your Team. Write down who’s in your support circle. It could be your family, running buddies, or even an online group. Recognizing them helps you appreciate them more.
  2. Show Up. Sometimes the best way to be a good teammate is simply to be present—whether it’s for a group run, at the finish line, or at family dinner.
  3. Communicate. Share both the struggles and the successes. Honest conversations build trust and connection.
  4. Celebrate the Wins. Like we say on all of our coaching calls, no milestone is too small. Every finish line, every breakthrough, every step forward is worth acknowledging—because it’s not just your win, it’s the team’s win.

Take a moment today to reflect:

Who’s on your team?

How can you be a better teammate?

Whether it’s through giving encouragement, accepting help, or just showing up, teamwork is what amplifies our running and our lives.
