413: Running and Broken Fences: Stop Patching What Needs Replacing
Jun 11, 2025So, we’ve had this fence in our backyard that’s been falling apart for years. Boards missing, leaning to the side, barely holding on. It’s been one of those tasks we keep pushing aside—whether due to time, money, or sheer procrastination. But, much like our lives and running routines, ignoring the issues only works for so long. Just as we're finally confronting the need to rebuild, it got us thinking about the metaphorical fences we erect and maintain in our lives—the boundaries of our energy, our bodies, and our personal space. The timing couldn’t be better as we dive into what it truly means to repair, rebuild, and sometimes even replace these fences in our lives.
When we ignore small signs in our lives—whether with our health or our physical environment—we end up paying the cost later. Just as with fences, short-term solutions like patching holes and propping up boards don’t hold for long. We need more significant interventions to maintain a solid foundation. In our conversation today, we draw lessons from those experiences, such as the hidden costs of waiting, the danger of overlooking warning signs, and the importance of seeking support.
A fence is much more than just a physical structure; it’s a boundary, a protector, a definer of our space and privacy. Similarly, the boundaries we set in our lives, whether personal or physical, play crucial roles in our daily experiences and long-term goals. Boundary-setting becomes even more critical in midlife—a phase where priorities shift, energy levels ebb, and responsibilities stretch across ages—from children to aging parents. Just as we set boundaries with our fences to protect and shield, we need internal and external boundaries to safeguard our well-being and ensure our time and energy are invested wisely.
Just like our shattered backyard fence, often we need an experienced hand to guide us, whether it's friends or professionals. In our support system lies the strength to rebuild—be it physical structures or personal metaphors. Our friend’s expertise eases our DIY fence replacement project—we borrow his knowledge, his tools, his experience. The same applies to running. Whether it’s shoes, training plans, recovery, or nutrition, drawing from a community or a coach can prevent missteps, save resources, and enhance performance.
Whether it’s your body or your backyard, building better means more than temporarily fixing what's broken. It involves assessing the need—should we replace or repair? And it takes commitment. Running is often mistaken as a solo sport, but when done right, it’s about community, shared experiences, and mutual support. Don't just lace up and run—do it with purpose and support
For a strong body and a fulfilling life, certain boundaries are non-negotiable. Nutrition, rest, recovery, and training load must be balanced. It's about respecting your limits, knowing when to push, and when to step back. Ensure your goals align with your current capabilities and life context. Listen to your body and set priorities that resonate with your current life stage—because just as a sturdy fence stands through all seasons, strong health and training encompass all phases of life.
As we draw this parallel between fences and life, consider what’s quietly falling apart in your own day-to-day life. What aspects of your life need sturdy rebuilding versus a complete redo? Are there fences to mend in your relationships, your health, your personal boundaries? It’s time to rebuild that which matters, seeking the right support and establishing boundaries that fortify both mind and body.
