423: How To Enjoy Running More
Aug 21, 2025How to Enjoy Running More
Today we’re talking about something that every runner—no matter your pace, distance, or experience—wants more of: joy in running.
Because let’s be honest: not every run feels magical. Some days you wake up ready to go, and others…well, not so much. Between aches, self-doubt, or just the grind of routine, it’s easy to lose sight of why we run in the first place.
But here’s the truth: running can feel good. It can feel freeing. And it can be something you actually look forward to—even on those tougher days. So today, I want to share some tips and insights from one of our recent podcast episodes to help you fall back in love with running, or deepen the joy you already have.
Why Running Might Not Feel Joyful Right Now
If you’ve been struggling to enjoy running, here are a few common culprits:
-
Pain
Running shouldn’t hurt. If you’re pushing through nagging pain, your body is trying to tell you something. Strength training, mobility work, or checking in with a physical therapist can help you run stronger and happier. -
Judgment
So many runners carry around labels like “too slow” or “not a real runner.” Let’s toss those out. Running isn’t about meeting someone else’s standard—it’s about moving your body and enjoying the journey. Release that self-criticism, and you’ll be amazed at how much lighter your runs feel. -
Chasing Performance
Setting goals is great, but if every run is about chasing a faster time or a longer distance, you’re missing the joy along the way. Set the goal and then determine the process and plan to get you to the goal, then release the goal. Make the goal to execute the process because that’s what you actually have control over. Progress isn’t always linear—and that’s okay! The journey itself is worth celebrating.
Build Consistency Without Burnout
Consistency is the secret sauce for progress, but forcing it through sheer willpower can backfire. Instead:
-
Don’t rely only on grit. Determination is important, but white-knuckling your way through every run leads to burnout.
-
Make it a habit. Reduce friction. Lay out your clothes the night before. Pick a time of day that works best for you. Let running fit into your life, not take it over.
-
Find your fun. New routes, great playlists, running buddies, or simply soaking in nature—these are the things that keep you coming back for more.
Focus on What You Enjoy
If you’re not finding any joy in your training, it might be time to step back and ask: Do I need a different plan? Or even a different activity for a while?
But if you still feel that spark when you think about running, then lean into what you love most. Maybe it’s community. Maybe it’s fresh air. Maybe it’s the satisfaction of completing a workout. Whatever it is, highlight those elements in your plan—and minimize the things that drain you (while still keeping in the essentials like strength training, of course!).
Practical Ways to Enjoy Running More
Here are some simple shifts that can make a big difference:
-
Address pain early. A strong body is a happy runner’s body.
-
Ditch the judgment. You are a runner, no matter your pace. Period.
-
Create a joyful plan. Build flexibility into your training. Let it reflect your life and goals.
-
Strength train. Think of it as your secret weapon for running longer, stronger, and with fewer setbacks.
-
Mix it up. Try trails, new playlists, running with friends—or running without headphones at all. Variety keeps things fresh.
Running isn’t meant to be a punishment. It’s meant to be something that adds joy, strength, and confidence to your life. When you find that balance between progress and pleasure, you’ll discover that running becomes more than just a workout—it becomes a celebration of what your body can do.
So the next time you lace up, smile, breathe deep, and remember: you don’t have to earn joy—it’s already waiting for you in every step.
