424: The Unspoken Secret To Becoming A Better Runner: Integrity

Aug 28, 2025

When was the last time you told yourself you would do something… and then didn’t follow through?

Maybe it was that morning run you snoozed away, or the strength workout you told yourself you’d do “later” (that never quite happened).

It’s easy to brush those things off as “no big deal,” but here’s the truth: those small broken promises add up. And at the heart of those moments lies something that matters deeply for our running and our lives—integrity.

So what is integrity and how does integrity connect to our results?

Integrity isn’t just a lofty value or a moral compass. At its core, it’s simple: doing what you say you’ll do.

It’s built through consistent action—showing up for the training you planned, keeping your word to yourself, aligning your choices with the kind of person (and runner) you want to be.

But here’s the thing that we don’t always realize: integrity isn’t about perfection. Breakdowns happen. We skip a session, hit snooze, or make a choice that doesn’t line up with our bigger goals. That doesn’t make us weak or lazy—it just highlights an area where we can grow.

When we fall short of our own promises, it can feel uncomfortable. Maybe we get defensive, or maybe shame creeps in.

But what if we saw those breakdowns not as failures, but as feedback?

What if we detached shame from integrity?

This was a major a-ha moment that I had a business event last week.

Integrity is a core value of mine. I consider myself a person of my word. People can count on me to do what I say I’m going to do.

But I realized that I was letting myself off the hook, more than I realized, and each of those little moments were breaks in my integrity.

Think about it: skipping your mobility work or grabbing a quick snack instead of the fuel your body needs might feel minor in the moment. But if it becomes a pattern, the foundation weakens—and over time that can show up as slower progress, nagging injuries, or frustration with your training.

Integrity breakdowns are something to be ashamed of and hide from - they’re more like mile markers. They don’t define you—they guide you to the adjustments you need to make.

Why Running is the Perfect Place to Practice Integrity

One of the beautiful things about running is that it gives us a safe place to practice this.

Every training cycle asks: Will you honor the plan? Will you trust yourself to follow through?

Whether it’s not cutting runs short, doing your warm-up instead of skipping it, or choosing rest when your body truly needs it, every decision is a chance to align your actions with your identity as a runner.

And when your actions and your identity match up? That’s when confidence, progress, and joy start to flow.

Integrity ≠ Shame

Missing a run doesn’t mean you’re lazy. Forgetting a strength workout doesn’t mean you’re inconsistent.

It simply means you have data. You have feedback.

Instead of spiraling into shame, ask: What’s this moment teaching me? And how can I be better next time? What can I improve here?

When you reframe it that way, every misstep becomes an opportunity to realign and recommit. That shift not only keeps you moving forward, it builds resilience.

Practical Ways to Build Integrity in Your Training

Here are some tools you can put into practice right away:

  1. Radical Awareness – Get honest with yourself. Where are you overpromising and underdelivering? Awareness is the first step toward change.
  2. Start Small – Integrity doesn’t have to mean big, sweeping changes. Pick one promise and keep it—like stretching before bed or sticking to your planned mileage. Or being on time for an engagement.
  3. Recommit Quickly – Missed a session? Don’t let it spiral. One skipped run doesn’t define you. Step back in as soon as you can.
  4. Celebrate the Wins – Every time you follow through, no matter how small, celebrate it! Each success strengthens the identity you’re building as a strong, consistent runner.
  5. Stay Flexible – Sometimes integrity actually means adjusting your plan for the bigger picture. If rest or recovery serves your long-term health better than forcing a workout, honoring that choice is integrity.

Living in Integrity = Running with Confidence

At the end of the day, integrity is about being the runner—and the person—you say you are.

When you follow through on those small promises, you build trust with yourself. That trust fuels consistency, resilience, and confidence—not just in your training, but in every part of your life.

This week, I challenge you: pick one training-related promise and honor it. Maybe it’s sticking to your warm-up, maybe it’s going to bed on time, maybe it’s fueling well after your run. Notice how it feels to live in integrity, and how that small choice strengthens your journey.

I’d love to hear what promise you’re making—share it with me, because celebrating your wins is part of this too. đź’™
