437: Thanksgiving Run-Down: Gratitude, Guilt, and Navigating the Holidays
Nov 27, 2025Navigating Thanksgiving & the Holiday Season as a Real Life Runner
The holiday season is officially here, and if you're anything like the runners I coach, it brings a mix of excitement, joy… and maybe a little stress, too. Thanksgiving marks the start of a season filled with family, food, traditions, disrupted routines, and plenty of opportunities to either feel grounded or completely thrown off.
In this special Thanksgiving episode of the Real Life Runners podcast, Kevin and I sit down to talk about what this season really means for us as runners—and more importantly, as humans trying to do our best. We dive into gratitude, holiday food anxiety, and how to keep showing up for your running without the pressure of perfection. Because yes, it is possible to enjoy the holidays and still feel connected to your goals.
Embracing the Real Power of Gratitude
Gratitude is more than a feel-good holiday theme. It’s a mindset tool that can literally change how your brain and body respond to stress.
When you intentionally pause to acknowledge something you’re grateful for, even something tiny, you shift your nervous system out of fight-or-flight and into a more balanced, grounded state. As runners, that matters. A calmer nervous system means better recovery, better focus, and a healthier relationship with your training.
One of my favorite things to ask runners is:
👉 What went well today? What can you appreciate about your run or your body right now?
It doesn’t have to be profound. Sometimes it’s: “I’m grateful the rain stopped long enough for me to get out the door,” or “I’m grateful my legs showed up even when my motivation didn’t.”
These little gratitude check-ins—before you run, after you run, or during a cool-down—can transform the way you experience the sport and your life.
Letting Go of Holiday Food Anxiety
Have you ever felt anxiety, guilt, or shame around food? If so, you’re not alone.
Thanksgiving especially can stir up worries about eating “too much,” feeling out of control, or needing to “earn” your food. I want to say this clearly, as your coach:
✨ You do not need to earn your food. Ever.
✨ Food does not have moral value.
✨ One holiday meal will not undo your progress—mentally OR physically.
Holidays are meant to be enjoyed. The flavors, the comfort, the traditions, the people you gather with—those things matter just as much as your training.
Instead of approaching Thanksgiving with fear, try this mindset shift:
I’m allowed to enjoy this meal. I’m allowed to be present. My body knows what to do.
Your body is incredibly wise. One indulgent day won’t derail you. Stress and guilt, on the other hand, can take a real toll.
This year, what if you chose compassion over control?
Presence over pressure?
How would that change your experience of the holidays?
Staying Connected to Your Training Through the Holidays
One of the biggest challenges this time of year is consistency. Schedules shift, routines change, and suddenly your running feels off track.
Here’s the truth:
Consistency during the holidays doesn’t mean perfection—it means intention.
It looks like:
-
A 10-minute run instead of skipping the day
-
A short mobility session when you can’t fit strength in
-
Choosing rest when you need it
-
Staying anchored to the identity of “I am a runner,” even if your schedule looks different
Your routine doesn’t have to be ideal to be effective.
And if staying consistent feels tough, that’s exactly why we created the 30-Day Running Reset—a simple, guided, supportive program to help you rebuild your foundation, strengthen your body, and reconnect with your goals… even during the busiest time of year.
Inside the reset, you’ll get:
-
A clear training plan that includes all of your strength + mobility workouts
-
Short lessons on the foundations of healthy running
-
A simple app that keeps everything organized
-
Accountability and guidance, so you never feel alone
It’s the perfect way to finish the year strong and step into the new year with confidence, clarity, and momentum.
