453: Training Upgrade or Shiny Object Syndrome? How to Know the Difference
Mar 19, 2026Overcoming Shiny Object Syndrome: How to Stay Focused and Actually Improve Your Running
Shiny Object Syndrome.
That feeling that maybe the answer is a new training plan… a different app… a new race… or some piece of gear that’s going to finally make things click.
I’ll be honest—this is something I’ve fallen into more than once.
While it feels productive in the moment, it can often be the thing keeping you stuck.
Because real progress in running doesn’t come from constantly starting over—it comes from staying with something long enough to actually let it work.
What Shiny Object Syndrome Really Looks Like in Running
It doesn’t always look obvious.
Sometimes it shows up as switching plans after a bad race.
Sometimes it’s getting bored and deciding your training “isn’t working.”
Sometimes it’s convincing yourself you just need something different to feel motivated again.
Underneath all of that is usually the same thing: you’re being pulled away from the fundamentals.
Looking for the latest and greatest thing that might be the magic solution to all of your running ills.
That feels productive. But the fundamentals are what actually lead to sustainable progress over time. Things like:
- Running easy most of the time
- Building a strong aerobic base
- Strength training consistently
- Prioritizing recovery and sleep
- Fueling your body well
Not super exciting, but incredibly effective.
There was a time when we switched our entire coaching platform, thinking it would solve a problem we were having with tracking strength workouts.
It took months. A ton of energy. A full migration.
In the end, I realized the original system wasn’t broken—we just needed to improve how we were using it.
So we went back.
That experience was such a powerful reminder that more often than not, the answer isn’t something new—it’s going deeper with what you already have.
4 Questions to Ask Before You Switch Anything
When you feel that pull toward something new, pause and run through these:
- Does this improve a fundamental?
Will this actually help you build strength, consistency, endurance, recovery, or mobility?
If not, it’s probably just noise. - Am I trying to improve—or escape?
Are you making a thoughtful change… or trying to avoid discomfort, boredom, or slow progress? - Have I actually done the work?
Have you been consistent with your current plan?
Or are you judging it without fully implementing it? - Will this simplify or complicate things?
The best systems make your training clearer and easier to follow.
If it adds more confusion, it’s likely not the solution.
Why the Basics Matter More Than You Think
I know the basics can feel repetitive.
But this is where the real magic happens.
When you consistently:
- Keep your easy runs truly easy
- Support your running with strength and mobility
- Fuel and recover like it matters (because it does)
That’s when things start to click.
When It Is Time to Make a Change
Now, to be clear—sometimes you do need a shift.
If you’re:
- Running every run at the same moderate effort
- Not doing any strength training
- Dealing with frequent injuries
- Or following no real structure at all
Then yes, it’s time to step back and make a bigger adjustment.
But that’s not chasing something shiny—that’s building a better foundation.
If you’ve been feeling stuck, plateaued, or like you’re constantly starting over, take a step back.
Instead of asking, “What do I need to change?”
Try asking, “What do I need to do better or more consistently?”
Progress in running isn’t about chasing the next best thing.
It’s about committing to the right things—long enough to let them work.
And more often than not, those “right things” are the ones you already know.
